Description

The primary membrane sialoglycoprotein of human red blood cells and their progenitors, glycophorin A, is a distinct and early indicator of the normal erythroid lineage. At every step of erythroid differentiation, including nucleated and non nucleated phases, glycophorin A is expressed. Since it is frequently positive, glycophorin A is a crucial diagnostic indicator of acute erythroid leukemia. Glyphophorin-A is expressed on the surface membrane of blasts that are categorized as lymphoid or undifferentiated myeloid in around 10% of adult acute leukemias.
